When Sir Thomas Raffles arrived to Singapore in 1819 to make the Island a Bastion of his empire - the British Empire, the city transformed into a hub for Southeast Asia which brought a huge amount of Chinese inhabitants for work. Now the city has more than 70 per cent of Chinese people. And the mandarin is the language spoken.
